Diamond - CUT

A well cut diamond can make light reflect in such a way it will take your breath away, the result of this is a magnificent display of three important diamond attributes: Brilliance, fire and scintillation. Brilliance is the combination of all the white light reflections from the surface and inside the diamond. This gives a polished diamond its brightness. Fire is the word for flashes of color you see and scintillation describes the flashes of light you see when the diamond is moved, or better called the dispersion of light.

The three major parts of a diamond from top to bottom are the crown, the girdle and the pavilion. The crown and the pavilion, and sometimes the girdle, have small flat surfaces called facets. Some diamonds have a small flat facet on the bottom of the pavilion called a culet.

Round Brilliant cut is the most popular, cut with 57 or 58 facets, depending if there is a culet or not, sometimes called a full cut if it is a small diamond.

Single cut is around diamond with 17 or 18 facets, usually very small in diameter.

Fancy cuts are any gemstone that is not round in shape, this would include oval, marquise, emerald (or rectangular) pear, princess (square), and heart shaped. There are also half moon, kite cut and so on.
